Song of the Day: Michael Kiwanuka – Beautiful Life
Mercury Prize winner Michael Kiwanuka shares his new song Beautiful Life, from a soundtrack to Orlando von Einsiedel’s new documentary Convergence: Courage In A Crisis, which is out on Netflix on October 12.
Kiwanuka is a British singer-songwriter and record producer who is signed with Polydor Records. His 2012 debut album, Home Again, went gold in the United Kingdom and his second album, Love & Hate, debuted in 2016 at number one. He has been nominated for numerous honors, including the Brit Awards, MTV Europe Music Awards, BBC Music Awards, and The Grammy Awards. In January 2012, he won the BBC's Sound of 2012, and in September 2020, he won the Mercury Prize.
Beautiful Life is his first new music since he released his last album, Kiwanuka, in 2019. That album marked Kiwanuka’s third solo effort and first since 2016’s Mercury Prize-winning album Love & Hate. Kiwanuka is currently working on his fourth album, with tour dates scheduled for the spring of 2022.

In this song I wanted to focus on the feeling that there’s a real strength in the human spirit when you try to look for beauty even in difficult situations. Of course, in some situations that becomes more and more difficult. But I just wanted to ponder on that and wonder what life would be like if I lived it like that. Ultimately whatever people feel from hearing the song is ok with me. But what I was trying to emit through the music was a feeling of defiance. A feeling of strength through adversity, Michael Kiwanuka said of Beautiful Life.
