El Michels Affair released a new track “Life of Pablo” from their highly anticipated new album “Adult Themes”. History of this album began in 2017, when Leon Michels, leader of the El Michels Affair, in between other musical project began creating compilations of short interludes intended to be sampled by hip hop producers.

Some of them end up on songs by Jay Z & Beyonce or Travis Scott. These minute-long snippets were inspired by the dense moody work of ‘60s composers like David Axelrod, as well as Moondog’s brand of classical jazz.

Michels liked so much creating these instrumentals that he decided to expand on some of the ideas and create what would become the soundtrack for a movie that has yet to be made, an imaginary film entitled “Adult Themes.”

Michels played with Soul Fire Records house band The Mighty Imperials before forming his own ensemble in 2002, and a band’s full-length album was released on the Michels-cofounded label Truth & Soul Records in 2005.

After performing with Raekwon at a concert, the group began working with other members of the Wu-Tang Clan. By 2009, this had yielded an album’s worth of material, which was released in 2009 as “Enter the 37th Chamber”, the name a play on the album “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)”. El Michels Affair followed this with a second album of arrangements of songs by Wu-Tang Clan and from its members’ solo releases, titled “Return to the 37th Chamber”.

Michels helped found The Menahan Street Band, co-produced Lee Fields album “My World”, Aloe Blacc’s “Good Things”, Dr John, and Lana Del Rey and received a writer credit on Adele’s Grammy-nominated album, “19”. Later he joined The Black Keys on tour and became a member of psych-rock project, The Arcs. In 2016, Michels co-founded Big Crown Records, which is releasing now his latest effort.
