Fresh sounds: Telemakus, Phøn, Javier Santiago, Tamuz – City Dreams

Telemakus shares a new song City Dreams and a full new album The New Heritage. He invited three other artists - Phon, Javier Santiago, and Tamuz to collaborate with him on that song, and the effect is magnificent.

City Dreams is a futuristic electronic jazz arrangement inspired by hip hop and new wave jazz. This track bounces between several sections within the composition, making for an interesting journey through sound. The track came together collaboratively, with each musician bringing their own ideas. Telemakus then shaped the pieces together for the first half, and let fellow pianist and arranger Javier Santiago take the helm for the second. Taking roughly one year to create, this track is an amalgam of ideas, progressions, and sounds distilled into a liquid drip of pure jazz-funk. City Dreams is an epic journey that truly unfolds the last movement before the entirety of The New Haritage drops.

Listen to Telemakus, Phon, Javier Santiago, Tamuz new single City Dreams, from his new album The New Heritage:

Telemakus is a 21 year-old Indian-American Pianist/Composer/Producer from California. He’s been making music since the age of 12. Self-taught on the keyboard, he strives to make music that wholly represents the diverse set of sounds between Jazz and Hip-Hop. He’s inspired by Herbie Hancock, DJ Harrison, Javier Santiago, Madlib, and Flying Lotus, to name a few.

I initially created the entire arrangement on my own, and set out to make it more special with musical inspirations I have. I initially titled the song after Fly Lo (Flying Lotus) when I first made it since it sounded much more electronic/trippy and was inspired by his arrangements. After developing it more, I reached out to some of my friends to add onto it. This was March of 2020 right when the pandemic hit. Tamuz and Phon took my ideas and developed them, while I took their ideas and developed those further. This song to me is the most creative one on the album. It’s one of the first compositions I wrote for the album, and propelled myself to make more songs on the album. By the time I finished this song, less than a year later. Fly Lo reached out to me in support of my music and piano playing, and I’ve been able to talk to him every so often, as he asks me for transcribing/piano advice since he is learning to play more. It’s been a very humbling experience, Telemakus said about the track.
