Herbie Hancock, Pharoah Sanders and Chad Smith joined Bill Laswell on his new album “Against Empire”

Herbie Hancock, Pharoah Sanders and Chad Smith joined Bill Laswell on his new album “Against Empire”.

Bill Laswell probably tried already every music genre in his career, and on this album, we can hear a delicious mix of all of Avant-jazz, rock, dub, experimental, ambient, sub-bass.

Everything is based on rhythms built around the solid and elastic drum foundations of probably the most versatile drum section: Jerry Marotta (Peter Gabriel), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Hideo Yamaki (Toshinori Kondo) master percussionist Adam Rudolph (Yusef Lateef) and Satoyasu Shomura (Japanese pop sensation).

But this is not the end of a guest list, therefore Herbie Hancock and Pharoah Sanders are on this album turning it into the real all-star band.

Bill and Herbie collaborate often together. In 1983, Laswell had a breakthrough with "Rockit", a song he co-wrote and produced for Herbie Hancock's album "Future Shock". An interesting fact is that Laswell in "Rockit" sampled Pharoah Sanders's "Upper Egypt & Lower Egypt".

He played bass guitar and co-wrote other songs on the album, leading to collaborations with Hancock through the 2000s. He won a Grammy Award for producing Hancock's next album, Sound-System.

Over the course of three decades, visionary bassist/producer Bill Laswell has been one of the most prolific and restlessly creative forces in contemporary music, always a few steps ahead of the curve. He worked with William S. Burroughs, Wayne Shorter, Ginger Baker, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Afrika Bambaataa, Brian Eno, Fred Frith, John Zorn,  Peter Brötzmann,  Sonny Sharrock, and with musicians in no wave, a genre that combined avant-garde jazz, funk, and punk.

Laswell produced albums for Sly and Robbie, Mick Jagger, PiL, Motörhead, Ramones, Iggy Pop and Yoko Ono.
