Song of the Day: Alina Bzhezhinska, HipHarpCollective - Soul Vibrations

Ukrainian-born, London-based harp player and composer Alina Bzhezhinska with her HipHarpCollective presents a new single Soul Vibrations, from her forthcoming new album Reflections.

Alongside her HipHarpCollective, Alina Bzhezhinska creates a unique sound on the harp with layered effects and electronics, combining original works and covers to pay homage to some of jazz, funk and hip-hop’s greatest innovators. Album Reflections features a blend of original compositions and covers of works by some of Bzhezhinska’s greatest influences, including Soul Vibrations, originally recorded by the pioneering composer and harpist Dorothy Ashby.

This iconic tune captured my imagination when I first listened to her album, Afro-Harping says Alina. I decided to make my own version of this tune by writing an arrangement that represents vibrating strings of the heart. I open the album with Soul Vibrations, as I wanted to show my deepest respect to my role model.

Originally from Ukraine/Poland, Alina Bzhezhinska has become one of the most innovative international harpists, based in London. She has created imaginative concert programmes and recorded with leading classical and jazz musicians: such as Django Bates, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and the Glasgow String Quartet. Alina’s London appearances include Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, live on BBC Radio 3, the London Jazz Festival and the London Film Festival. She stormed the UK music scene when she and her quartet appeared at the Barbican, receiving a nomination for Best Live Experience of the Year at the 2018 Jazz FM Awards. Her critically acclaimed debut album Inspiration (Ubuntu Music) further affirmed her growing reputation, and she has since performed at major venues and festivals around the world.
