Song of the Day: Igor Willcox Quartet - North City

São Paulo's fusion-jazz band Igor Willcox Quartet released an excellent new single North City.

The band was formed by the leader Igor Willcox (drums/compositions), Vini Morales (electric piano/synth), Wagner Barbosa (saxophone) and Glecio Nascimento (bass) featuring elements of jazz, funk and fusion. The group – which plays original compositions, exploring all musicality, spontaneity, and synergy - has achieved great notoriety in the instrumental music scene, standing out and performing in the most important festivals and Jazz clubs around the world.

He explained his love to fusion jazz - It’s hard to explain why, but it’s something that comes from my soul. I really identify with this kind of music, mainly fusion, which is a genre that there are a lot of mixtures between genres. Which, in my point of view, is universal music from the worldwide. Not from a specific country or region. Adding Artists outside of Brazil have a stronger influence on me. I grew up listening to jazz and fusion: Miles Davis, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Chick Corea & Return To Forever, Allan Holdsworth, Wayne Shorter, Weather Report, John Coltrane, among others.

Igor Willcox, a descendant of several generations of musicians, was influenced by his father, Paulo César Willcox -maestro, arranger, pianist and vibraphone and his mother, Sonia Willcox - singer. Considered one of the most important drummers in Brazil, he has played and recorded with important artists of brazilian and international scene as; The legendary singer Jimmie Bo Horn (KC & Sunshine Band), Guilherme Arantes, Familia Lima, Sandy & Junior, Cecilia Stalin, Daniela Mercury, Frejat, Gary Brown, among other artists. In instrumental music, Igor has played and recorded with great names of Jazz and Brazilian music such as: Bocato, Tomati, Tony Lakatos, Frank Colon (Weather Report), Michel Leme, Marcinho Eiras, Arismar do Espirito Santo, Thiago do Espirito Santo, Sandro Haick, Erik Escobar, Rubem Farias, Decebal Badila, Vini Morales, Glecio Nascimento, Marcus Cesar, etc. Currently Igor Willcox is dedicated to his instrumental music project "Igor Willcox Quartet", that played in important Jazz Festivals and clubs around the world such as Yardbird Suite (Canada), Blue Note, North City Jazz Festival (Serbia), The Rex (Canada), Bourbon Street, among others.
