Song of the Day: Nubiyan Twist & K.O.G. - If I Know

Nubiyan Twist unleashes one of the big dancefloor tracks from the record, If I Know featuring guest vocals from Ghanaian dynamo K.O.G. (Onipa / K.O.G. & The Zongo Brigade). The song features hard-hitting Afrobeat horn lines, jazz elements and dubbed-out production alongside K.O.G.’s traditional vocals and rap. "'If I Know' is all about needing to respect everybody and to let them do their thing. Whatever your feelings, you should not bring people down, you should always encourage them", the band explained.

If I Know is the last single from their forthcoming album “Freedom Fables” out via Strut Records and now arriving 12th March 2021. The Leeds / London collective is effortlessly fusing on that track different genres like soul, jazz, hip hop, highlife, or broken beat with great musicianship and lyrics. The new album is set to catapult Nubiyan Twist even further into the limelight and cement their position as one of the UK's leading soulful collectives of the current generation. It’s the follow-up to the acclaimed Jungle Run from Spring 2019. The album will feature some great guests: Cherise, Soweto Kinch, Pat Thomas, Ria Moran, K.O.G. and Ego Ella May, who sang on the previous brilliant single "24/7".

The band was formed in 2011 at the Leeds College of Music by a group of players around Tom Excell. They spent four years woodshedding, shifting personnel, and playing whatever gigs were available just as the 21st century cross-hybrid music scene was coming into view. Their 2015 self-titled full-length debut album on Wormfood received strong support from the jazz and hip-hop press, and earned them support gigs with De La Soul, Hot 8 Brass Band, Quantic, and the Robert Glasper Experiment.

"Freedom Fables reflects on the power of narratives. Each vocalist on this record explores their own memoirs, a freedom of expression underpinning our belief that music is the ultimate narrative for unity. The record references a lot of music that we all loved during our formative years; you can hear touches of broken beat, blunted hip hop, highlife, Latin, jazz and UK soul running through the tracks", explains Tom Excell.
