Fresh Sounds: Maxwell House Project – Buena Ventura
The Maxwell House Project is a one-man musical project of trumpeter Max O’Leary, who just shares his first solo song Buena Ventura. After years of touring the globe with various artists (Mestizo Beat, Surefire Soul Ensemble, Mexico68, Tribal Seeds, Natural Vibrations, Save Ferris), Max decided it was finally time to sit down and start work on his solo project. Buena Ventura is essentially a Nu-Funk/Jamaican Disco mixed in an old tape-style sound. Reminiscent of a blend of Orgōne and Kraak & Smaak.
“I’ve always loved the sound that artists like Orgōne, Mestizo Beat, and Mexico68 have achieved at Killion Studios, and I have been lucky enough to record there! I do my best to emulate that sound while mixing it with a little bit more low end “umph" and new school elements”, Max described his musical inspirations.
The Maxwell House Project is a vehicle for Max to blend genres, stretch their boundaries, and collaborate with friends. While recording and mixing the majority of the tune himself, Max enlisted the help of good friends and fellow tour mates Aquiles Magaña (Mestizo Beat) on guitar and Derrick Wong (DJ Williams Shots Fired) on bass. Bringing in a smooth funky flare to this dance tune, while maintaining the relaxed feel of a Jamaican funk. With sexy picked guitar lines, soaring old mellotron string leads, and a driving horn lead.
