Song of the Day: Theon Cross – We Go Again
An award-winning tuba player and composer Theon Cross released his new single We Go Again.
Theon not only redefines what can be done with his instrument but also transcends traditional genre conventions with his heady brew of low-end theory combined with strains of jazz, dub, hip-hop, soca, grime, and other sounds from the Afro-Caribbean diaspora.
"We Go Again" is about choosing to forgive ourselves from moments of ignorance in our past and making the conscious decisions to embrace a new day of reinvention and growth. Although lockdown has been challenging, it’s also given us time to reflect and think about the changes we wish to see once we return to normalcy. I look forward to the return of live performance and having the privilege to present new music, new ideas and a new outlook, Theon described his new song.
Listen to Theon Cross new single We Go Again:
Theon Cross is a core member of the jazz band Sons of Kemet. He has also worked with Moses Boyd and Nubya Garcia in his solo projects. Other collaborators include Jon Batiste, Emeli Sandé, Kano, Lafawndah and Makaya McCraven. His solo releases include the 2015 EP Aspirations and the 2019 studio album, Fyah.
This year sees him following up his critically acclaimed 2019 debut album, Fyah, with a new album on which he will again push the sonic boundaries of his tuba by using the studio to turn it into a complete beat and melody making machine on which a range of vocalists and rappers will add their verses. Essentially he is looking to create a sound system powered by breath and, in so doing, explore his Afro-Caribbean roots, change perceptions of himself and his instrument and explore themes of self-reliance, place and identity.
