London ensemble Maisha released an epic new single “Open The Gates”.
London ensemble Maisha released an epic new single “Open The Gates”, 16 minutes long rhythmic spiritual jazz, based on a simple melody and bassline. Binker Golding and Tamar Osborn joined the band in the studio, bringing their unique styles to the recording.
On the flip side is a beautiful live recording of "Osiris" (taken from 2018 album “There Is A Place”). The recording was taken from the band’s final show of 2019, in Lille, France. “Osiris” featured bandleader Jake Long joined by the original line-up from the album sessions – Amané Suganami, Twm Dylan, Tim Doyle, Shirley Tetteh and Nubya Garcia (plus Al MacSween who has been touring frequently with Maisha over the last year). The live version of "Osiris" is a document of how the way they play the song has grown and changed as they’ve toured and switched up the line-up.

The six-piece group, led by bandleader Jake Long, brings a fresh slant to the weighty spiritual jazz tradition. Their 2016 debut EP was released through Jazz Re:freshed (whose weekly shows and record label are an institution for forward-thinking jazz), and were part of "We Out Here", Brownswood’s early 2018 record which documented London’s genre-bending, jazz-influenced underground. They’ve been featured on Boiler Room, supported the Sun Ra Arkestra, and played at Church of Sound, a live series that’s quickly become a staple of the emergent scene.
It followed a heavy period of touring where they played sell-out shows and festivals across the world. This included a series of shows with legendary saxophonist Gary Bartz, where they played a headline slot at Gilles Peterson’s debut We Out Here Festival and a show at Royal Festival Hall for the 2019 London Jazz Festival. At the end of this tour Maisha went to studio to register straight to vinyl collaborative session with Gary Bartz, which was released earlier this year on Night Dreamer Records.
