Song of the Day: Sampology feat James Chatburn – Reassemble

Meanjin/Brisbane producer Sampology teams up with Australian/Berlin based songwriter James Chatburn on Reassemble, out via Middle Name Records.

Reassemble is an uptempo and sweeping track, melding lush strings, woodwind and xylophone with Chatburn’s powerful voice, reminiscent of an emotional dream sequence in a classic Disney film. The single follows Memories in Flight, a stunning, harp-led instrumental introducing the album, and Suffer and Swim, featuring the inimitable Allysha Joy, each lifted from the upcoming LP Regrowth, out September 3rd.

On the collaboration, Sampology recollects I distinctly recall walking the streets of Kreuzberg after the session with James Chatburn. I had brought him an instrumental I had been working on and he brought so much life and strong melodic value to the song. That melody was rolling through my head walking the streets and I could not escape the desire for it to evolve into a lush, classic, orchestral Disney-styled emotional creature. That cemented my plan to put together string groups and woodwind when I got back to Australia for Reassemble and some of the other album tracks.

Listen to Sampology new single Reassamble from his forthcoming album Regrowth:

Sampology is a producer, DJ, radio host for Worldwide FM and vinyl enthusiast since his teens, based in Meanjin/Brisbane, Australia. As a boy, he spent his weekends singing in the choir at St John’s Cathedral and by his mid-teens he had discovered vinyl and a love for sample heavy music - early Native Tongues, The Avalanches, disco and soul. Sampling dance music made a huge impression on Sampology - indeed, his performer name is a nod to this early influence of sampling.

Over the past six years, he has organically progressed to producer - of his own stunning EP releases Natural Selections (2016) and Mt Glorious (2018) as well as producing Tiana Khasi’s Meghalaya EP and First Beige’s Mirrors EP. His position in the Brisbane music community led to Gilles Peterson inviting him to join the Worldwide FM family in 2019 and he has hosted a monthly show on the global station in the two years since.

On September 3rd, Sampology will release the Regrowth LP - an album that his last two EPs have built towards. The majority of Regrowth was written and recorded during the Australian bushfires in the summer of 2019, and the album’s title came from reflecting on the environment during this time.
